Today in science I learned that oceans are one of the main reasons why the earth is warm. This is because as heat rises and eventually escapes the ocean to warm the atmosphere, it creates air temperature and winds. In turn, winds push horizontally against the sea surface and drive ocean current patterns. You can see this done by looking at the graphic on the right. This also happens because there is more water than land on earth — 72 percent of the earth is ocean, and they store a lot of energy in the form of heat.
This was very interesting to me because now I know one of the reasons why places closer to the ocean are warmer than places further to the ocean such as Florida and Puerto Rico. This impacts Florida so much that it’s moderate to hot all the time but other places further from the ocean are not.
